Everyone loses hair. But for many of us, hair loss at any age and for any reason is just too much to deal with, specially for us women. In fact, it’s normal to lose between 100 to 150 hairs a day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. But what if a person loses more than that or even loses hair in patches? Well, in this case there must be reason or a group of causes of hair loss that a person must know about. Usually, the reasons differ from men to women. Causes of hair loss in women may have more impact on how they feel about their appearance. In this article I’m going to talk about why women may lose hair and will put some women hair loss treatments. Be it homemade recipes or the known medical treatments available out there.

As mentioned before, most people normally shed 100 to 150 hairs a day. This usually doesn’t cause noticeable thinning of scalp hair because new hair is growing in at the same time. Once you exceed that, however, you’re losing it at an abnormal rate. Hair loss occurs, when this cycle of hair growth is disrupted. Or when the hair follicle is destroyed and replaced with scar tissue. It’s commonly more accepted — and expected — that men lose their hair. But when women begin to lose theirs, the psychological damage can be just as devastating as any serious disease. Studies have shown that women who experience hair loss suffer from self-esteem and body image issues, impacting their social life and feelings of attractiveness. This kind of negative feelings can only make hair loss worse. 

The exact causes of hair loss in women may not be fully clear, but it’s usually due to one or more of the following key causes:

Genetics (heredity)

A genetic predisposition of hormonal balances and imbalances, along with the conversion of testosterone into DHT, are the lead causes of hair loss. The genetic predisposition to hair loss can be inherited by either your mother or your father’s side of the family. The most common type of hereditary hair loss is female pattern baldness. Women with this trait tend to develop thinning at the hairline behind the bangs. The condition develops slowly and may start as early as your 20s.

Hormonal changes and medical conditions

A variety of hormonal changes can ba the lead causes of hair loss in women, including:

  • Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes and imbalances can cause temporary hair loss. This could be due to pregnancy, childbirth or the onset of menopause. Hormone levels are also affected by the thyroid gland, which may cause hair loss in women.
  • Patchy hair loss. This type of nonscarring hair loss is called alopecia areata. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles — causing sudden hair loss that leaves smooth, roundish bald patches on the skin.

Medical conditions

  • Scalp infections: Infections, such as ringworm, can invade the hair and skin of your scalp, leading to scaly patches and hair loss. Once infections are under control, hair generally grows back.
  • Other skin disorders: Diseases that cause scarring alopecia may result in permanent loss at the scarred areas. These conditions include lichen planus, some types of lupus and sarcoidosis.
  • Hair-pulling disorder: This condition, also called trichotillomania, causes people to have an irresistible urge to pull out their hair, whether it’s from the scalp, the eyebrows or other areas of the body.

Stress or Trauma

You may notice excessive hair shedding several months after a stressful or traumatic event. Luckily, that type of shedding is normal and temporary but may be long-lasting if the stress persists.

Medications

Hair loss can be due to  the use of some drugs used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure and birth control. Intake of too much vitamin A may cause hair loss as well.

Dieting and Poor Nutrition

A poor, unbalanced diet may be one of the causes of hair loss in women. The body shifts its nutritional stores to vital organs like the brain and the heart. According to experts, low protein, iron stores, vitamin D and calcium can cause hair loss. If the body doesn’t get enough nutrients it won’t be able to provide the hair with enough minerals and vitamines. As a result, the hair will thin, weaken and eventually fall out due to poor nutrients. In order to maintain healthy, strong hair, you must start with your daily meals. 

Rough Handling

Years of pulling your hair too tight in a bun or ponytail or wearing it in cornrows or braids can put stress on the hair. So can bleaching or regular use of dyes, relaxers and other hair products as well as straightening irons and curling wands. Try to give your hair a space to breathe by slowing down the use of hair tools and chemical products. 

As you can see, causes of hair loss in women vary from sever to easy causes. But no matter what the reason is, if you don’t treat the cause you can’t treat hair loss. A small trip to your doctor’s office will save you the time and put you on the right direction of your women hair loss treatments.

Patchy alopecia, after birth H.L, hair loss due to stress..etc. But some types, however, need a serious treatment. Women hair loss treatments come in different shapes and kinds. Some prefer to use drugs, some go with the hair plantation, but some prefer to use homemade recipes and hair regrowth ingredients. It doesn’t matter what type of hair treatment you go with. The goals of treatment are to promote hair growth, slow hair loss or hide hair loss. Here is a list of available women hair loss treatments:

Medication

The only over-the-counter medication approved by the FDA for female pattern hair loss is minoxidil ( Rogaine or Theroxidil). This topical treatment which helps slow or stop hair loss in about one in five women and can produce some new growth in some women. It usually takes about one year to see how well the treatment will work for you and this is a life-long commitment; if stopped, hair loss begins again.

If you don’t respond to minoxidil, your doctor might prescribe antiandrogen medications. These may slow hair loss and even stimulate growth in some women. In some cases, the doctor may prescribe finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, which blocks an enzyme that regulates the production of androgens. However, this medication causes birth defects, therefor, it is FDA approved only for men and women who are no longer childbearing.

Surgery

In the most common type of permanent hair loss, only the top of the head is affected. Hair transplant or restoration surgery can make the most of the hair you have left. During this procedure, your surgeon removes tiny plugs of skin, each containing a few hairs, from the back or sides of your scalp. He or she then implants the plugs into the bald sections of your scalp. You may take a hair loss medication before and after surgery to improve results. Although, surgical procedures to treat baldness are expensive and can be painful. Possible risks include infection and scarring.

The main goal of most women hair loss treatments are:

  • Increasing blood circulation in the scalp
  • Maintaining proper mineral and vitamin levels in the body
  • Nourishing the hair from roots to ends
  • Protect the hair shaft from external damages (weather changes and sun exposure)

Luckily, there are many ingredients that can be a part of women hair loss treatments. Though, you’re gonna have to free few minutes on your schedule.
