Back to our subject of today’s review. I previously wrote about 8 great clarifying shampoos in separated reviews. But today I’m gonna put them all in one review to ease things for you when you’re trying to choose the right shampoo for your oily hair. I’m gonna talk a bit about what causes oily scalp and greasy hair, to give you a small idea about how that happens.
Understanding Oily Scalp and Greasy Hair
Dealing with greasy hair is a really annoying and an embarrassing thing. Unfortunately, oily hair is a condition that is extremely common amongst many people. Thankfully, there are remedies out there that can help get rid of the problem. Certain shampoos have been designed specifically to help those who have excessive oily hair. But the question is, what really causes our hair to become so oily and lifeless? The answer is all on our scalp.
Causes and Factors
Before thinking about how to get rid of oily hair. It is important to fully understand why is it there on the scalp in the first place. Every pore on our skin has a sebaceous gland, including the scalp. Better known as oil glands. These are responsible for maintaining proper hydration levels by producing sebum. Sebum ( a waxy substance) is another name for the oil our pores emit onto our scalp and skin. It’s purpose is to keep the skin and hair from becoming too dry and to protect them against the drying effects of the weather. However, some sebaceous glands produce excess oil, making the hair look limp and lifeless. In the worst case scenario the sebum glands clog the hair roots and may cause excessive hair loss, itchiness and dandruff.
Becoming aware of the causes can help us understand how to properly cut down on the grease. Here are some common factors that can lead to this condition.
Excess oily hair can be the result of age, hormones, and genetics. Hormonal issues in both men and women can lead to excess sebum production in the scalp. Increased hormones during puberty are often to blame for excess oil in the hair. However, other types of hormone fluctuations can cause oily hair as an adult.
According to experts, some diseases like Parkinson’s disease, disorders related to the pituitary and adrenal glands, the ovaries and the testicles can increase or decrease sebum production.
Birth control pills are a leading cause in women, as well as pregnancy. Other medicines that can also causes oily hair such as; oral contraceptives, antiandrogens and vitamin A derivatives like isotretinoin definitely reduce sebum productions. Others, like testosterone and progesterones, increase the production.
Your personal care routine may also be to blame. Excess scrubbing during shampooing can irritate the scalp, causing more oil, as well as too many washes. Your hair should never be washed more than once a day nor should it be left for long without washing. Even dry hair can become limp and greasy from a lack of washing. Too much hair products like conditioners and sprays can lead to the same result. So slow down or avoid using those.
Seating during work out or hot weather can also lead the glands to overproduce oil and grease in the scalp. However, that’s not a reason for you to become lazy, thou *smirks*.
Unhealthy eating habits
Non proper diet can lead to overproducing oil in the scalp. Eating junk food or greasy meals also makes the glands produce excessive oil. Your pores breath out everything you eat, be it healthy or not.
Certain hair types can be more prone to becoming oily than others. For instance, fine hair often appears more greasy than others. People with fine and thin hair are mostly to suffer from greasy curls. Because weak follicles produce more oil in the scalp. Also thin hair is a bit more difficult to manage and style because it’s often limp and wispy. If you are not using the appropriate products, fine hair can easily become more greasy than thicker hair types, especially when using heavy creams or conditioners. In other hand, curly hair is often dry at the bottom but oily at the roots.
